Injection Well 1998 - 2000

The following are excerpts of articles written for our Newsletter, The Pipeline; Winter, 1998; Spring 1999, Summer, 1999.

Project history
Largest single project (cost-wise) ever undertaken by IWA.
Idea conceived by IWA Board in February 1998.
Joint project with City of Sanibel.
Solve City’s immediate environmental problem and our possible future problem.
First discussed with City on 3/27/98.
Agreement with City finalized on 9/30/98 (City share = 28.6%, IWA = 71.4%, based on anticipated use rates).
Then designed well and chose drilling contractor (Youngquist Brothers International)
YBI mobilized to site in June, 1999 and the rig was raised.
Permit to construct obtained on 7/20/99.
         Notice to proceed on 7/21/99.
         Drilling commenced on 7/26/99.
DEP inspection and start-up on 3/16/2000.
Permission to operate under construction permit (8-24 months) on 3/23/2000.
Ready for City use in emergencies on same date.
IWA began continuous injection of Brine Concentrate on 4/1/2000.
Over 2 years from conception to completion.
Interesting Facts and Figures
Largest hole drilled = 40” diameter (first 400 feet).
Largest steel casing = 34” diameter.
Total depth of 3,235 feet (0.6 mile).
Double-wall steel casing installed to 2,550 feet (14” diameter).
Over 12,000 ft3 of cement used to seal casings to surrounding rock to prevent leaks.
Open hole from 2,550 to 3,235 feet (22” diameter).
Actual injection zone below 3,000 feet.
Over 2,200 feet of rock between injection zone and overlying drinking water acquifers (excellent confinement).
Injection zone was about 500 feet deeper than anticipated based on Fort Myers Beach well (cost more money to drill deeper).
Rock not as fractured as expected (saved money due to less cement).
Both above facts improve confinement and environmental protection.
However, on downside Increased depth increased injection pressure but almost insignificantly (IWA=20 psi, IWA/City=40 psi).
(Deep monitor well drilled to 1,700 feet, cased to 1,610 feet, with 90 feet open hole, 6” diameter).
Learned a lot regarding geology under our island, first 30 feet = sand/shell.
Next 3,205 feet, various forms of limestone and related-types of rock.
Some rock contained numerous sand dollar fossils over 40 million years old (show core from 1,500 feet).
