John R. (Jack) Cunningham

I was born April 1, 1941 in Dowagiac, Michigan.  Soon thereafter my family moved to Indiana where I lived most of my life before retiring to Captiva.  I have always had an adventuresome and entrepreneurial spirit.  In junior high and high school I ran a one hundred and fifty customer paper route.  I was an active Boy Scout each summer in Maine, earning Eagle Scout rank, and attending both national and international Jamborees.

I graduated with a B.S. in Business from Indiana University in 1963 and as a 2nd Lt. in the USAF through ROTC.  While in school I was President of the Arnold Air Society, member of the I.U. Student Foundation, and member of Sigma Chi social fraternity.  I served four years in the Air Force as a Supply Officer.  Fortunately, I served three of those years in Germany.  Also fortunately, in 1964 I married my college sweetheart, Michele.  I rose to the rank of Captain before being honorably discharged in 1967.

I returned to Indiana University to earn an MBA degree in Finance and Management, in 1969, being selected to the business school’s honor fraternity.  Over the next twenty-nine years I advanced from Treasurer, to President and Chairman of the Board at Thermo Products Inc., a manufacturer of heating and cooling equipment.  During my tenure, we grew the company from one million dollar sales per year to over $25 million sales volume per year and employed over 200.  In order to better understand the products we  manufactured I took a number of engineering related courses at Purdue University.

During my Thermo Products years, I established a formal outside Board of Directors, plus served, in a voluntary capacity, on several medical and education related boards.  I also served as President of The Alliance, a group of about fifty Presidents of closely held, $10 million plus Indiana businesses who met quarterly to exchange ideas and learn from each other.

I sold Thermo Products in 1997 and retired in 1998.  I am now a Florida resident, but still spend summers in Indiana.  I am still married to my wife of forty-five years.  We have two daughters and two grandsons.  On Captiva, I am a Firefighter 1 certified, 10 year volunteer with the Captiva Fire District and am Vice-President of the Captiva Civic Association.   In Indiana, I am a Board Member of the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Foundation, an environmental organization, and head of the Recreational Path Committee of the 2nd Century Committee, a town improvement group.  Since 2008 I have been an investor and member of the Board of Managers of Freedom Sciences, LLC, a    Pennsylvania based healthcare products company.

"Candidates for the Board of Directors may be nominated by any member of the Association, provided the name or names of such candidate(s) shall be presented in writing to the Secretary in a letter signed by at least ten (10) members and delivered at least fifteen (15) days prior to the annual meeting."  (Article VI, Section 5, Bylaws of The Island Water Association, Inc.)
